Lumino Sucessfully ComPLETES sovereign ENTANGLED PHOTON SOURCE project
Lumino Technologies, a UK company specialising in free space quantum and optical communications, has successfully concluded the project developing a UK sovereign Entangled Photon Source (EPS) which is a key technology that underpins the future of secure quantum communication.
Entangled photons are pairs of light particles whose properties remain linked, even when separated by large distances. Harnessing this phenomenon will make it possible to build ultra-secure communication networks, as well as new scientific and technological applications in space and on Earth.
QNET-EPS was a £1.1M Innovate UK–funded project led by Lumino, working with a consortium of academic and industry partners including Alter, Redwave, Vodafone and Heriot-Watt University.
In 12-months, Lumino translated a benchtop demonstrator of the EPS to an industrial prototype suitable for deployment in representative environments alongside achieving a market leading fidelity and brightness
The development of this EPS prototype directly supports Mission 2 of the UK’s National Quantum Strategy where “by 2035, the UK will have deployed the world’s most advanced quantum network at scale, pioneering the future quantum internet.”
Omar Iqbal, Founder at Lumino Technologies: “This was a fantastic achievement of the team who were able to work together at pace to take the technology out of the lab and deliver a highly performant prototype in under a year. This is a cornerstone technology for the UK to develop its own quantum network, and a critical enabler for the future Quantum Internet. We look forward to building on this development for maturing the EPS product in follow-on projects.”
